May Employee of the Month: Oliver Shier

Oliver Shier is attending UW-Madison, double majoring in real estate and accounting. Coming out of his freshman year, he wanted to be able to push himself to learn new things and gain experience, while living in his hometown of Beaver Dam, which he was able to do with EcoWash. Oliver has sold over $40,000 in projects so far, well on track for $75,000+ by the end of the summer.

Here is our brief interview with Oliver about his experience at EcoWash so far:

What made you choose to work at EcoWash?

EcoWash brought an opportunity to advance skills that I will need in a full-time role such as sales and marketing experience. It also helps build crucial soft skills such as communication, leadership, organization, and overall hard work. I knew that it was up to me if I wanted to thrive this summer. In some ways working for EcoWash is easy, but sometimes it is not. Marketing for 20+ hours in a week through rain and cold weather is not the most thrilling experience, but I knew it had to get done. I try not to think about potential but rather focus on staying motivated day by day to get the most done that I can.

What have you enjoyed the most from your internship so far?

I’ve enjoyed helping people get their homes back in order. Especially with washing and staining decks, there is typically a big transformation that takes place. Seeing those results and the satisfaction from my clients is a rewarding feeling. I’ve also enjoyed working with other people, both labor staff and other division managers. It is validating to know that other people are likely having similar experiences and are willing to help if any issues arise.

What skills have you learned from your internship so far?

I have learned to be more confident when talking with people I do not know very well. At first, it felt intimidating, but most people have something that you can relate to if you talk with them for a minute or two. Even if people aren’t interested in EcoWash’s services at the time, it is nice to learn more about other people and have short conversations with them. I also have increased my organizational skills significantly. There is always so much going on, especially managing over $40,000 of work over 40 clients. Communication and organization is the most important thing in running a business smoothly.

What are you looking forward to the most?

I am excited to get to a point where my labor crew is settled in, so I can continue to work on sales and oversee production more efficiently than when I am producing projects myself. I am also looking forward to some of our company retreats, which should offer a much-needed break, and a chance to develop relationships with some of the other division managers, scattered throughout Wisconsin and the surrounding states.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Thanks to EcoWash for this opportunity. I am glad to say I am currently third in total sales on the Ecowash leaderboard, and I am motivated to keep myself toward the top!

Congratulations Oliver on being our May Employee of the Month! We are proud of all the success you've had here.
