Is deck stain waterproof?

Homeowners stain their decks to protect them from moisture. The Midwest’s tough weather can damage property easily, between hail, snow, or rain.

Deck staining can prevent the wood from cracking and causing splinters when you finally get to enjoy the summer heat outside on the deck. Overall, deck staining increases the life of your deck and makes it look pretty!

A commonly asked question about deck staining is: is deck stain waterproof? While deck stain is water-resistant, it is not 100% waterproof.

Hand in a blue sleeve stains a wooden deck railing with a brush outdoors, with yard and trees blurred behind.

When a deck is properly stained, water that lands on top of the stain should bead up on the surface of the stain. If water immediately soaks into the stained wood instead of beading up, it is likely that the water repellent parts of the stain need to be redone.
