How can a pressure washing project damage a window?

During a standard house pressure washing project, all exposed surfaces on the sides of your home will be washed. This includes siding, gutters, and windows. At EcoWash, we wash each surface differently, with windows receiving the most gentle treatment. To wash a window properly, use light pressure and spray directly at the window, not at a sharp angle. This will remove debris on the window and has almost no risk involved.

When a window is washed too close, with too high of pressure, or at a sharp angle, there is a risk of water intrusion between the seals on the window panes or around the window trim into the house. If water gets into the panes, the window was almost certainly already faulty, and water will accumulate between the panes, leading to a foggy appearance. If the window trim is improperly sealed, water can get into the walls of the home. This can lead to mold growth and rotting in the studs, drywall, and sheathing. If this occurs, pressure washing was likely not the first time water has entered the home through this gap, rain intrusion is far more likely.

How common is window damage during pressure washing?

It’s not very common if done properly, but mistakes can happen, especially with high-pressure settings or if windows are old or improperly sealed. DIY pressure washing poses a far higher risk than professional services, as professionals use controlled pressure and proper techniques when washing windows.

At EcoWash, out of the thousands of home we have washed we have only had one small incident of window damage that was due to a faulty window the client was aware of beforehand.

Costs associated with window damage

  • Minor damage (seal failure, small cracks) – $100-$300 per window for repairs.

  • Broken glass replacement – $200-$1,000 depending on size and type.

  • Water damage inside the home – Can cost hundreds to thousands if mold, rot, or drywall damage occurs.
