Why Pergolas Are a Nightmare to Stain/Paint

Pergolas are meant to define and enhance outdoor spaces. They create semi-sheltered areas that blend homes with nature and offer shade, as well as a space to hang flowers, lights, or other decorations. However, to properly maintain a pergola, it is recommended that homeowners pressure wash and stain their wooden pergolas every 3–5 years. What may look like a simple job involving a collection of posts and beams can quickly turn into a long headache. The time, cost, and overall upkeep of a pergola can be much higher than initially expected.

Why do pergolas wear down so quickly?

Pergolas are heavily exposed to the sun’s UV radiation, which rapidly breaks down finishes. The more sun exposure a pergola has, the faster it will deteriorate, even when high-quality stains are used. Additionally, pergolas are not built to effectively shed water. There is often moisture trapped in the wood prior to staining, and it may take multiple dry days before the wood is ready to properly absorb the stain.

Why are pergolas such a pain?

With all of the small slats, tight spaces, and awkward edges and angles, fully staining a pergola takes a very long time. It can also become expensive to purchase the right-sized brushes needed to reach every area as thoroughly as possible. While a paint sprayer can be used, it requires tarping off the entire surrounding area, as well as back-brushing to smooth out any potential drips.

Furthermore, pergolas are typically built at an awkward height, requiring the use of ladders that must be moved frequently to reach each board. This increases overall fatigue, the likelihood of making a mess, and safety risks. Not only does the staining process take a significant amount of time, but the preparation does as well. Pressure washing from a ladder presents the same challenges as staining.

Overall, pergolas offer certain benefits and visual appeal, but their maintenance should not be underestimated. Pergolas can quickly become expensive, time-consuming, and frustrating to deal with. For homeowners considering a pergola, it’s important to understand the long-term commitment involved before installation. Knowing what to expect upfront can help prevent frustration and ensure the pergola remains an asset rather than a burden.
